UPPER EAST REGION

It covers an area of about 8,842km², which constitute about 3% of the land area of Ghana . It is located in the north eastern part of Ghana . The region is bounded in the north by the republic of Burkina Faso , in the west by Upper west region, in the south by the Northern Region and in the East by the Republic of Togo .

With Bolgatanga as the administrative capital, the region is famous for handicrafts. Also, the local villages with their distinctive building styles have evolved through the generations.

PEOPLE:
The major ethnic groups of the region are Kusasi, Nankanse and Kasena.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES:
The people engage in economic activities like fishing, farming and livestock rearing. Food crops they cultivate are rice, millet, sorghum, beans, tomatoes, onion and ground. A tomato canning factory, meat processing factory and rice mill are the main industrial bases of the region. Smock weaving, leather works, blacksmithing, pottery, pito brewing, shea nut and groundnut oil extraction are also carried out on a small scale.

CLIMATE:
There are two seasons, the rainy season, which starts from May to October, and the Harmattan season that begins from November to April.

TOURIST ATTRACTION SITES IN THE REGION:
Bolga Market
A splendid place to meet traders from all over the region and bargain for basketware, leather goods and traditional clothing.

Tongo Rocks
The Whistling Rocks of Tongo rise dramatically from the landscape just 10km from Bolga, and the Harmattan creates ghostly whistling sounds.

The Paga Crocodile Pond

Located at the north-east border, this is a sacred sanctuary for crocodiles. The reptiles are enticed from the water by the custodians.

Naa Gbewaa's Shrine
This traditional shrine commemorates Naa Gbewaa at Pusiga who founded the Mole-Dogbon tribe in the 13th century.

Navrongo
The historic mud-built church is well worth a visit.
