Programme
Arrival at the Kotoka International Airport followed by a transfer from the hotel. A welcome dinner at the Guest House will include a briefing about the tour by a representative of Blastours. (Overnight stay at a Guest House in Accra )
We start the tour with a visit to the Sakumono lagoon, a Ramsar site east of Accra will provide opportunities to observe pied kingfishers , long-tailed cormorants , western reef egrets and great egrets , African spoonbill etc. A walk along the lake will likely reveal breeding Killitz's plover and collared pratincole . A trip to the Shai Hills after lunch to view bird life like the African Hobby , Grey Kestrel, Stone Partridge, Green and Violet Turacos, Senegal Parrot, Grey Hornbill, Swallow- tailed Bee-eater, Blue-breasted Roller, White-crowned Robin Chat and Croaking Cisticola . Continue trip from there to Aburi, a town on the mountain. (Spend the night at a Hotel in the mountains, 2-star)
Wake up early for a visit to the Aburi Botanical Gardens, this centuries-old botanical garden has a wide variety of fauna and flora which include a wide array of birds like Black-and-White Mannakins, Splendid Glossy Starling , Chestnut-winged Starling , African Pied Wagtail , Speckled & Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird and the colourful Hairy-breasted Barbet in the tall palmtrees. There is also the possibility of viewing Collared , Green-headed , Tiny and the sparkling Buff-throated Sunbird, Green-backed Camaroptera . We set off for the Central Region after lunch. Upon arrival in Cape Coast , we make an early evening stopover at the Kakum National park . This forest provides the opportunity to see much of Ghana 's indigenous plant life, as well as rare butterflies, birds and other forms of wildlife. There are 269 bird species whose presence have been confirmed at this park, plus an additional 56 species on the hypothetical list. We return to our guest house for dinner. Early morning visit to the Kakum National park gives an excellent walking tour on the canopy walkway also the longest and highest of its kind in the West Africa . V iewing amongst others will include Splendid Glossy Starling, Bates's Sunbird and African Harrier-Hawks. The park is also famous for the presence of Black Bee-eater, Red-fronted Parrot, Green-backed Camaroptera, Superb Sunbird, Bar-breasted and Red-billed Firefinch and Black-necked Weaver . On our way from the Park, we stopover at the Hans Botel, a resort partly built on stilts on a river with lots of bird life, crocodiles and monkeys. The river passing through this resort nests over a hundred species of birdlife including Shikra, Bronze & Magpie Mannikin, Vieillot's Black & Orange Weaver, nesting Village Weavers and roosting Long-tailed Cormorant and Cattle Egrets. Leave the Guest House very early in the morning for the Kakum National park . The view on the canopy with the early morning sun will be one of the best of forest birding ever. From the various platforms, birds will include White-headed Woodhoopoe, Violet-backed Hyliota, Blue Cuckoo-shrike, Honeyguide Greenbul, Rufous-crowned Eremomela, Tropical Boubou and several Velvet-mantled Drongo hawking around for insects. After lunch we continue our trip to Kumasi through Assin Manso. (Overnight stay at a Lodge in Kumasi )
Set off early in the morning for the Bobiri forest and Butterfly reserve, whose wide collection of birdlife include the Blue-spotted Wood-dove, Swamp Palm Bulbul, Yellowbill , Red-fronted Parrot , African Green Pigeon , Little Greenbul , Western Black-headed Oriole , Yellow-mantled Weaver and the Crested and Red-headed Malimbe . Set off early for a visit to the Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary the habitat for winter migratory birds. A guided walk to the lake to see African Jacana and Long-tailed Cormorant. This area will also produce among others Common Sandpiper , Yellowbill , Woodland Kingfisher , Lemon-bellied Crombec , Blue-throated Brown Sunbird and Velvet-mantled Drongo . In the more open areas with tall grass Red-headed Quelea and Magpie Mannikin . Stopover at the Lake Bosomtwi, a crater lake believed to have been created by the impact of a falling meteorite. This natural lake is surrounded by farming and fishing villages and is rewarding for birdwatching. Set off for the Eastern Region after lunch. (Overnight stay at a riverside resort in Akosombo)
Experience a leisurely ferry trip on the Dodi Princess, which cruises along the Volta Lake . Enjoy a meal on the Ferry whilst it sails along the river. (Overnight stay in Accra.)
